We recently had the honor of framing a Wing family heirloom. This 1921 coronet had been refurbished, and the family wanted it preserved and showcased. They also wanted to be able to remove the horn from the frame on occasion. That meant our framing technique had to include a removable mounting process as well as an outer frame that was hinged, so it could be opened. Debra and Bob choose photos of family members showing the horn as well as sheet music that was played. The rich royal blue and silver treatment made the horn jump out of the frame. We chose to use satin to trim the sides and the bottom of the shadow box, mimicking theater curtains. We also engraved plates describing the specifics of this particular instrument.  The end result was a the beautiful piece shown in the photo. Our thanks to the Wing family for trusting us with this project, and to Debra for allowing us to photograph and post the project.

We hand make, one at a time, the bat holders pictured. Anything can be engraved onto the back, with a logo or special drawing on the bottom part of the wood. A similar wooden stand can be made for a baseball. We also have in stock plexiglass boxes that hold and protect that signed and important baseball.

If you find something you like on the website, send me an email. We can decide what it is you want, how you want it designed, and how you want it delivered. A design drawing is made, emailed, and ok’ed by you.  Then it is created and can be picked up, delivered, or shipped. Easy!

We also have some of our ready made kids frames posted. These are handlaid/painted Italiam mouldings in set sizes. We have 5×7, and 8×10 sizes of the teddy bears, trucks, boats, houses, and crayon frames. We also have brightly colored frames in 11×14.  All frames include a custom cut mat of your choice of color.

This process can be applied to a multitude of different items. Logos, drawings, printing can be sublimated onto bag tags, dog tags, name badges, koozies, clothing, and many different gift items. Photos can be transfered in full color to iphone/ipad cases, tiles, tags, hats, flip flops…you name it, it can be done.

I will be adding an area on the web site for sublimation items. I will post some pictures for all to see what some possibilities are. It’s a fun process that I’m looking forward to learning more about, and trying out some different techniques.

The end of January we made our annual trip to Las Vegas for the PPFA (Professional Picture Framers)/West Coast Art and Frame Show at the Mirage. This year we were able to add the ARA (Awards and Recognition) Convention and Trade Show at the Rio also. Both organizations provide educational programs, as well as the largest trade shows of their kind in the country. It was a whirlwind of learning, and looking, and listening to the people who know the Framing and Engraving world the best. The 5 days flew by, and we came home with lots of new ideas. We feel this trip is a must to stay up on the new things happening in the industry(ies).  It was nice that the 2 overlapped for this year.

On a lighter note, this week we will be leaving on a real “VACATION” for 10 days. Backwoods studio will be closed from March 1st thru March 10th. We will be back in the office on Monday March 11th.  A few days of well deserved rest and relaxation, away from telephones and internet service in the the plan.  Hopefully all the emergency framing and engraving will wait till we get back!

For those wondering about the Chamber of Commerce annual awards, we place second to the new Red Wing Brewery. We were thrilled to be that close. As our daughter said, beer will always win. We had the pleasure of spending the evening with Norm, of the Brewery, at the table of Jen et al from Signworx. A great time was had by all.
